Originally from Uttar Pradesh, we migrated in large numbers to Bengal centuries ago. We are further divided into two sections: Barendras who settled in the north or northeast region of Ganges or Padma river and Rarhis who settled in the south or southwest region of Ganges or Padma river. Some of our common surnames include Chakroborty, Bhattacharya, Ray/Roy, Roy Choudhury and Majumdar.
